Star Spangled Treats

What's the 4th of July without a little themed treat? In which case I present to you just that. Take your standard square-cut rice krispie treats and throw them out the door (well, don't really, because once should never throw away a good rice krispie treat). However, these star-shaped ones are All- American and super delicious! So whip up a batch before the fireworks show tonight and watch the party light up. Happy Birthday America!

Star Spangled Treats

Ingredients:
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 10-oz. bag small marshmallows
  • 6 cups puffy rice cereal
  • 1 can vanillas frosting
  • red food coloring
  • blue food coloring
  • patriotic sprinkles
In a large pot, heat the butter over medium heat and melt it completely. Add in the marshmallows and lower the heat to low. Stir constantly until the butter and marshmallows melt together. Remove form the heat and add in the rice cereal. Stir well with a spatula to combine.

Prepare a 9x13-inch glass baking dish by spraying with some non-stick cooking spray, then press the mixture firmly into the dish. Allow them to cool and stiffen up a bit.

Meanwhile, divide your frosting evenly between 3 small glass bowls. Add a few drops red food coloring into one, and a few drops of food coloring into another bowl. Stir well to mix the colors. Leave one bowl the plain white frosting color.

Once they are cool, use a knife or spatula to get the treats out of the pan, and place them on a sheet of wax or parchment paper on the counter. Take a star-shaped cookie cutter and cut a bunch of shapes out.

Frost them with the red, white, and blue frosting, add some sprinkles, and serve! Happy 4th of July!
